A Holter monitor is a portable device that continuously records an electrocardiogram for one or two days while a person goes about their normal life. Holter ECG monitoring shows how the heart works during the day, at night, during exertion and at rest. It helps to detect arrhythmias and episodes of ischemia that do not show up on a standard ECG recorded over a few minutes in the office.
At HBMedical, a 24-hour Holter ECG costs 1400 UAH, and a 48-hour Holter costs 2000 UAH. The medical center is located at: Kyiv, 3 Oleksandra Dovzhenka St., 2 minutes from «Shuliavska» metro station. The polyclinic is open every day from 8:00 to 20:00.
Holter Price at HBMedical
Prices and the list of services may change, so the administrator will confirm the current price when you book.
The price depends primarily on the recording duration: one day or two. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is paid separately if the doctor has prescribed it as well.
What a Holter Shows
After the device is removed, the recording is analyzed for the entire monitoring period. A Holter ECG shows:
- the minimum, maximum and average heart rate during the day and at night;
- the number and types of extrasystoles — premature heart beats;
- episodes of rapid rhythm (tachycardia) and slow rhythm (bradycardia);
- episodes of atrial fibrillation or flutter, including asymptomatic ones;
- pauses in heart activity and conduction disorders (heart blocks);
- changes that may indicate insufficient blood supply to the heart muscle (ischemia);
- the relationship between the ECG recording and what you felt and did, based on your diary.
A Holter shows the rhythm and electrical activity of the heart, but not its structure. The size of the chambers, the thickness of the walls and the function of the valves are assessed by cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography), which is also performed at HBMedical.
Who Is Prescribed Holter Monitoring and When
A Holter is usually prescribed by a cardiologist, general practitioner or family doctor. Typical reasons:
- a feeling of skipped beats, a «sinking» sensation or a racing heartbeat;
- dizziness, darkening of vision, near-fainting, episodes of loss of consciousness;
- changes on a standard ECG that need to be clarified;
- suspected atrial fibrillation;
- chest pain or discomfort that occurs from time to time;
- assessing how rhythm-regulating medications are working;
- checking pacemaker function;
- follow-up after a heart attack, myocarditis or heart surgery;
- assessing the rhythm before surgery or intense sports activity, if the doctor considers it necessary.
If no one has prescribed an examination yet, start with a cardiologist consultation. The doctor will determine whether a Holter is needed, for how many days and whether it is worth monitoring blood pressure at the same time.
24-Hour or 48-Hour Holter
A 24-hour recording is usually sufficient if symptoms occur every day or the doctor needs to assess the overall rhythm pattern and the frequency of extrasystoles.
A 48-hour Holter makes sense when symptoms occur less often, for example once every few days. The longer the recording, the better the chance of capturing the episode that made you seek care.
If the sensations occur once a week or less often, even two days may not be enough. The absence of abnormalities in the recording does not yet mean that there are none. Discuss further steps with your cardiologist.
Holter ECG, Standard ECG, ABPM and Cardiac Ultrasound: What Is the Difference
| Examination | What it assesses | Duration |
| ECG | The heart rhythm and electrical activity at the moment of recording | A few minutes |
| Holter ECG | Rhythm, arrhythmias, pauses, signs of ischemia over one to two days in your usual routine | 24 or 48 hours |
| ABPM | Blood pressure during the day, at night and during exertion | 24 hours |
| Cardiac ultrasound | The structure of the heart, valve function and myocardial contractility | About half an hour |
These examinations do not replace but complement each other. All four can be done at HBMedical together with a cardiologist consultation.
Blood Pressure Holter (ABPM)
A blood pressure Holter is the common name for 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). This is a different examination: a cuff is placed on the upper arm and automatically measures blood pressure at regular intervals, including during sleep.
ABPM helps to confirm or rule out hypertension, detect nighttime blood pressure elevation and «white-coat hypertension», when blood pressure rises only in the doctor’s office. It also shows whether blood pressure medications are working sufficiently. ABPM at HBMedical costs 1400 UAH.
How to Prepare for a Holter
No special preparation is needed, but a few simple steps will improve the quality of the recording:
- take a shower before the device is fitted, because it cannot get wet while you wear it;
- do not apply cream or lotion to your chest on the day of fitting, so that the electrodes stick better;
- men with thick chest hair may be advised to shave the areas where the electrodes are attached;
- wear comfortable clothing under which the wires will not be visible;
- bring previous ECGs, Holter reports, cardiac ultrasound results and a list of the medications you take;
- do not stop taking prescribed medications without your doctor’s recommendation.
How the Examination Is Performed
- Several disposable electrodes are attached to your chest, and a recorder is connected to them. It is small and is worn on a belt or a strap. The procedure is painless and takes a few minutes.
- You are given a diary. Throughout the monitoring, you write down what you did and when: walking, climbing stairs, meals, medications, sleep. Record every unpleasant sensation separately: palpitations, skipped beats, pain, dizziness, with the time.
- You return to your usual routine: go to work, take a walk, sleep at home. Normal daily activity is needed for diagnosis, so do not spare yourself more than usual.
- After one or two days, you come back to the center, the device is removed and the recording is sent for analysis.
While you wear the Holter:
- do not get the device and electrodes wet; do not take a shower or bath;
- do not undergo MRI, X-ray or physiotherapy procedures;
- avoid heating pads, electric blankets and areas near powerful electrical equipment;
- keep your mobile phone away from the recorder, for example do not carry it in a chest pocket;
- do not detach the electrodes yourself;
- if an electrode comes off, note the time in your diary and contact the center.
Results
After the recording is analyzed, you receive a report describing the rhythm, heart rate and any abnormalities found. The administrator will confirm the turnaround time of the report when you book.
The Holter report is best discussed with a cardiologist. The doctor will compare the result with your symptoms, diary and other examinations and determine whether treatment is needed.
If it is more convenient, you can discuss the results at an online cardiologist consultation (1050 UAH).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Holter?
A Holter is a small portable device that continuously records an ECG for one or two days. It captures the work of the heart in normal everyday conditions, including during sleep and exertion.
How much does it cost to have a Holter fitted at HBMedical?
A 24-hour Holter ECG costs 1400 UAH, and a 48-hour Holter costs 2000 UAH. 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring costs 1400 UAH.
What does a Holter heart monitor show?
The heart rate over the course of the day, extrasystoles, episodes of tachycardia and bradycardia, atrial fibrillation, pauses in heart activity and signs of ischemia. It also shows whether the symptoms from your diary match changes on the ECG.
How does a Holter differ from a standard ECG?
A standard ECG records the heart for a few minutes at rest, while a Holter records continuously for 24 or 48 hours. That is why a Holter detects rhythm disorders that occur from time to time.
Can I wash while wearing a Holter?
No. The device and electrodes must not get wet, so it is best to shower before it is fitted and after it is removed.
Can I sleep with a Holter?
Yes, and this is important for diagnosis, because some rhythm disorders occur precisely at night. You can sleep in any comfortable position, making sure the wires do not come off.
Can I exercise during Holter monitoring?
Normal activity is needed for diagnosis. Intense workouts with heavy sweating can loosen the electrodes, so it is better to agree the level of exertion with your doctor. Record any exertion in your diary.
24-hour or 48-hour Holter — which should I choose?
The duration is determined by the doctor. Two days are usually recommended when symptoms do not occur every day.
Do I need a referral for a Holter?
Please confirm this when booking. If the examination has not yet been prescribed, it is better to first have a cardiologist consultation to determine the required monitoring duration.
What is a blood pressure Holter?
It is 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). A cuff on the upper arm automatically measures blood pressure over the course of a day, including at night. At HBMedical, ABPM costs 1400 UAH.
