What Is a Herniated Disc?

Which Symptoms Require Urgent Medical Attention?
Do not delay seeking medical attention if back pain is accompanied by:
- sudden or rapidly increasing weakness in the limbs;
- difficulty urinating or loss of bowel control;
- numbness in the perineal or saddle area;
- difficulty walking or impaired coordination;
- severe pain following an injury;
- high fever and a deterioration in general health;
- pain associated with cancer or significant unexplained weight loss.

Is Contrast Needed for a Herniated Disc MRI?
For the initial detection of a herniated disc, MRI is usually performed without contrast enhancement. A standard scan is generally sufficient to assess the intervertebral discs, nerve roots, and spinal canal.
A doctor may recommend contrast-enhanced MRI when it is necessary to:
- assess changes after spinal surgery;

How to Prepare for a Spine MRI
Special preparation is usually not required for a spine MRI without contrast. Before the examination, patients should:
- remove jewellery, watches, and other metal objects;
- inform the medical staff about implants, prostheses, clips, a pacemaker, or other implanted devices;
- bring previous scans and medical reports, if available;
- inform the staff in advance about pregnancy or claustrophobia;
- clarify the preparation requirements if contrast administration is planned.
It is important to remain still during the examination. The duration of the scan depends on the selected part of the spine and the examination protocol.
What Should You Do After Receiving the Results?
An MRI report alone does not determine whether surgery is necessary and does not replace a medical consultation. The findings should be compared with the location of the pain, sensation, muscle strength, reflexes, and other examination results.
After the scan, the results can be reviewed by a neurologist, neurosurgeon, orthopaedic trauma specialist, or the doctor who referred the patient for diagnostic imaging.
