Preparation and conduct of electroneuromyography

Many neurological pathologies are accompanied by impaired nerve conduction. Usually, this is felt as muscle weakness, impaired sensitivity or numbness. Electroneuromyography stimulation gives doctors an effective tool for assessing the state of nerve conduction and accurately adjusting treatment.

Indications for the procedure are the following conditions:

• damage to peripheral nerves, spinal cord due to injuries and other mechanical factors;
• acquired neuropathies: diabetic, due to poisoning, etc.;
• abnormalities in the development of nerve fibers, hereditary pathologies;
• myasthenia;
• sclerotic pathologies: multiple, amyotrophic sclerosis;
• radicular, tunnel syndrome;
• myelopathy;
• spinal cord injury.

ENMG has practically no contraindications. Exceptions may be patients suffering from epileptic disorders, severe mental pathologies. It is not recommended to conduct the study for a person with a pacemaker, severe infectious diseases.

ENMG is performed in two versions:

• examination of the upper extremities;
• myography of the lower extremities.

Neuromyography provides valuable information even in the initial stages of pathology, when its manifestations are not noticeable or minimal.

Types of ENMG at HBMedical

The study is performed on special equipment – an electromyograph. There are two main types of procedures:

1. Stimulation. The examined area of ​​the body (for example, the arm) is stimulated by electrical impulses. The reaction of the limbs is recorded by the device.
2. Needle. A thin electrode is inserted into the muscle of the limb (leg, arm). It reads the impulses of the nervous system that control the examined area of ​​the body.

There is a separate, third type of diagnosis – tremorography. The technique allows the specialist to identify individual neurological pathologies and predict the course of the disease.

ENMG of the lower extremities (upper) does not require special preparation or anesthesia. It is enough to free the desired part of the body from clothing to place the electrodes. The average duration of the study is 30-60 minutes.

Cost of Electroneuromyography of the Lower and Upper Limbs

During the ENMG study, the doctor determines:

• Stimulation technique: speed of signal conduction through the nervous system, F-wave and H-response (late muscle reaction and reflex response of the spinal cord), decrement (response to a series of identical stimuli);
• needle: fasciculations (involuntary impulses), twitching, background and pseudo-impulses.

Electromyography price is determined depending on the type and depth of the study. The cost also includes interpretation of the results of the procedure.
