Preparation and conduct of endoscopic examination

The procedure is performed using an endoscope. This is a flexible hose with an optical device (camera) and a light source. With their help, the doctor has the opportunity to examine the cavities of the organs in real time.

Preparation for diagnosis depends on its type. In some cases, the patient is prohibited from eating or drinking before endoscopy. Indications for the procedure are reduced to several goals:

• in order to identify the disease, causes of pain and discomfort;
• therapeutic endoscopy: removal of neoplasms, taking tissue samples;
• prophylactic: screening of patients at risk.

In addition, endoscopy is used in emergency situations: bleeding, foreign body in the larynx and respiratory tract, etc. A specially equipped probe can cauterize vessels, extract foreign objects, and perform other manipulations.

The procedure is performed in a sitting or lying position on the side – it all depends on the area of ​​examination. The duration is from 20 to 50 minutes.
