Preparation and conduct of ultrasound

Ultrasound of internal organs is used both for primary diagnosis and during treatment. Indications for the procedure are the following symptoms:

• swelling of the extremities;
• dizziness, loss of consciousness without a reason, impaired coordination;

• diseases of the lungs, liver and other organs.

Ultrasound examination is special in that there are no absolute contraindications. Therefore, all patients can receive a referral for this procedure.

Preparation for an ultrasound examination depends on the type of procedure. As a rule, the patient needs to follow the following recommendations:

• refrain from smoking before the procedure;
• if you are taking medications, ask your doctor if you need to stop them before the examination;
• inform the specialist if you have had an endoscopy of the gastrointestinal tract the day before;
• you need to drink several glasses of water before an ultrasound of the bladder;
• rectal ultrasound requires cleansing the intestines, so eating food beforehand is not recommended.

No special preparation is required before diagnosing organs such as the thyroid gland, blood vessels, prostate, salivary glands, etc. The doctor will inform you about the specifics of the procedure at the consultation stage.
