What is lumbar protrusion?
Lumbar spine protrusion is the initial stage of degenerative changes in the intervertebral disc, when its structure loses elasticity, flattens and begins to protrude beyond the vertebral segment, without tearing the fibrous ring. This is an important point: the disc is already deformed, but a hernia has not yet formed. It is at this stage that treatment is most effective and allows you to prevent progression.
Normally, the disc provides shock absorption and uniform load distribution. But with prolonged static position, excess weight, incorrect movements or age-related changes, it loses its ability to maintain its shape. When the protrusion begins to press on the nerve roots, a pain syndrome occurs, characteristic of lumbar spine protrusion. If not intervened in time, lumbar disc protrusion can turn into a full-fledged hernia with pronounced neurological manifestations.
