Indications for septoplasty

A curved bone-cartilage plate makes it difficult to ventilate the nasal cavity and nasal breathing, which leads to pathological changes in the mucous membrane. Patients with a deviated nasal septum often complain of dryness and itching in the nose, recurrent rhinitis, and chronic inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. A properly performed operation helps to get rid of these symptoms.

Indications for septoplasty:

• Deformation of the central nasal septum of 2 or 3 degrees;
• Chronic pathologies of ENT organs – rhinitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, etc.;
• Allergic reactions;
• Private headaches;

Septoplasty is not performed if the following contraindications are present:

• severe diseases of internal organs;
• severe diabetes mellitus;

• acute phase of somatic and infectious pathologies;
• period of exacerbation of chronic diseases;
• weakened immunity, immunodeficiencies.
• age less than 18 years (in childhood and adolescence, bone and cartilage tissue is actively growing. therefore, there is no point in performing the operation – after plastic surgery, the plate may become distorted again and repeated intervention is required).

Septoplasty is not performed on women during pregnancy and lactation. It is also undesirable to perform the operation during menstruation.

There are several methods of nasal septum correction. They differ in the instrument that the surgeon uses for manipulations. There are 5 main types of septoplasty:

When is vasotomy of the nasal turbinates performed?

Vasotomy is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of the nasal turbinates or destroys the blood vessels of the lower nasal turbinates. Complete restoration of breathing is achieved by reducing the blood supply to the hypertrophied mucous membrane. Rhinosurgical surgery is the only way to combat rhinitis that does not respond to conservative therapy.

Nasal breathing is necessary for the full functioning of internal organs. Any violations lead to the development of serious pathological processes in the body. In case of nasal congestion that does not respond to drug therapy, and in case of chronic rhinitis, doctors recommend vasotomy.

•       Classical. The surgeon uses a scalpel, which injures the tissue quite severely. Therefore, the rehabilitation period for classical septoplasty is the longest.
•       Endoscopic. The surgeon works using a special probe that is inserted into the nasal cavity. At its end there is a small video camera and lighting. The method is minimally invasive, so recovery is faster.

Preparation for surgery and the postoperative period

You should prepare for septoplasty. Preparation includes a preoperative examination. It allows you to assess the patient’s health and identify any contraindications to plastic surgery. The following set of diagnostic procedures is usually prescribed:

•       Laboratory tests (general urine analysis, general and biochemical blood tests, tests for infections, coagulogram, determination of blood group, Rh factor, sugar level).
•       Instrumental studies – computed tomography of the sinuses (fluorography and echocardiography are also possible).

The doctor may prescribe additional tests and consultations with more specialized specialists – a cardiologist, an ENT doctor, a therapist. It is also necessary to consult with an anesthesiologist to choose the optimal method of anesthesia. He must be informed about any allergic reactions. The examination must be completed no earlier than 10 days before the operation.

The procedure necessarily includes anesthesia. This can be local or general anesthesia in agreement with the patient. The specialist gains access through the nasal cavity, the operation involves external incisions.

On average, correction by surgery lasts 45-90 minutes. After the operation, the surgeon inserts splints and tampons into the nose for 1-2 days, which may temporarily cause some inconvenience.

Usually the day after the operation, the doctor removes the splints and tampons. After the operation, it is necessary to be observed on an outpatient basis by a specialist until recovery, and to rinse the nasal cavities with a disinfectant spray.
