Knee arthroscopy in Kyiv
What is knee arthroscopy?
Arthroscopy is a modern minimally invasive method of surgical treatment and diagnosis of the knee joint. The operation is performed through small punctures in the skin using an arthroscope – a thin optical instrument that transmits images of internal structures to a monitor. Thanks to this, the doctor can accurately assess the condition of the joint and perform the necessary manipulations without significant tissue damage.
Modern arthroscopy is the “gold standard” of orthopedic surgery, as it combines high efficiency, minimal trauma and rapid recovery of the patient.

Main indications for arthroscopy
- Anterior (ACL) or posterior (PCL) cruciate ligament tear
- Meniscal damage or degeneration
- Hypertrophy of the Hoff’s fat pad (causing pain and movement restriction)
- Chronic or reactive inflammation of the synovial membrane (synovitis), recurrent symptomatic popliteal Baker’s cyst
- Presence of loose bodies in the joint
- Early stages of osteoarthritis
- Consequences of traumatic injuries
Types of arthroscopic interventions at HBMedical
- ACL/PCL plastic surgery – arthroscopic repair of cruciate ligaments using the patient’s own tissues
- Menisectomy – partial or complete removal of damaged areas of the meniscus
- Synovectomy – removal of inflamed and pathologically altered synovial tissue
- Resection of hypertrophied Hoff’s fat pad
- Arthroscopic revision of the knee joint to clarify the diagnosis and assess the condition of intraarticular structures
- Combined operations for complex and multiple lesions

How the operation is performed
Arthroscopic surgery is performed in a sterile surgical suite under spinal or general anesthesia. A camera and special instruments are inserted through microincisions (less than 1 cm). Under video control, the surgeon assesses the condition of the intra-articular structures and eliminates pathological changes. The duration of the procedure depends on the complexity of the injury and is usually 30–90 minutes. Due to the minimally invasive nature of the intervention, most patients can return home the same day or the next morning.
Advantages of arthroscopy
- Minimal tissue trauma
- High precision of the intervention
- Short recovery period and early mobilization
- Less postoperative pain compared to open surgeries
- Small sutures, good aesthetic result
- Low risk of complications
- Preservation of joint function – the technique allows maximum support of the natural biomechanics of the knee
Recovery after arthroscopy
Recovery begins on the first day. The patient is prescribed an orthosis or a bandage (if necessary), an individual rehabilitation program, including exercise therapy and physiotherapy. Full return to physical activity depends on the type of surgery: from 2–6 weeks after minor interventions to 4–6 months after plastic and reconstructive surgeries.

How long does recovery take after meniscus removal?
On average, 2–4 weeks, depending on the scope of the intervention and the patient's general condition.
Can I play sports after ACL surgery?
Yes, after completing a full rehabilitation course (approximately 4–6 months), a return to active life and sports is possible.
Are there scars after arthroscopy?
Punctures up to 1 cm in size leave minimal scars that become almost invisible over time.
