What is total knee replacement?
Total knee replacement is a modern orthopedic surgical procedure aimed at replacing damaged structures of the knee joint with an artificial implant. The main goal of the operation is to reduce pain, restore the resistance of the limb and improve the patient’s functional activity.
This method is indicated in cases where conservative treatments have proven ineffective. At HBMedical, we combine experience, technology and care for each patient.
When is knee replacement indicated
- Gonarthrosis in the late stages and deforming gonarthrosis
- Inflammatory arthropathies (rheumatoid, psoriatic arthritis)
- Aseptic necrosis
- Post-traumatic deformities and consequences of intra-articular fractures
- Chronic pain syndrome resistant to drug therapy
- Disorder of the lower limb axis
- Loss of joint function due to its destruction

Types of knee joint replacement
- Total endoprosthesis – replacement of all articular surfaces
- Partial (unipolar) – replacement of one part of the knee joint
The selection of the implant is carried out individually, depending on the age, anatomical features, bone density and activity of the patient.
How knee surgery is performed
- The duration of the intervention is on average 1.5–2.5 hours
- Anesthesia: spinal or general
Main stages:
- resection of damaged joint structures;
- preparation of bone surfaces;
- implantation of endoprosthesis components (titanium or combined materials);
- restoration of the mechanical axis of the limb;
- wound suturing and aseptic dressing.
Hospitalization: usually 3–7 days, depending on the individual course of the postoperative period.
